How God Built More Than a Building at Hebron Baptist Church.
THE GATHERING PLACE- How God Built More Than a Building at Hebron Baptist Church
"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain." — Psalm 127:1
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, members and friends of Hebron Baptist Church gathered to celebrate far more than the completion of a building project.
They gathered to celebrate God's faithfulness.
After fifteen months of prayer, sacrifice, generosity, and construction, Hebron officially dedicated its new fellowship and ministry facility known as The Gathering Place.
Fresh, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, The Gathering Place includes a spacious foyer, modern restrooms, state-of-the-art audiovisual capabilities, a large gathering room, and a commercial kitchen anchored by an impressive island that now serves as the heart of the building. It was easy to imagine the countless meals, Bible studies, fellowship events, ministry meetings, and Gospel conversations that will happen there for years to come.
Yet the most remarkable part of the story isn't the building itself.
It's how God built it.
The story began on a Wednesday afternoon in 2024. Members of Hebron gathered on the site where the church's old parsonage had recently been torn down and hauled away. Standing on an empty piece of property, Pastor Ed Hinkson challenged the congregation to do one thing before discussing plans, budgets, or blueprints.
Pray.
Together, they asked God for direction. Did the church truly need to build? Was this what the Lord wanted? Several members prayed that day, seeking God's leadership and asking Him to make His will unmistakably clear.
In the weeks that followed, the church elected a Building Team to explore the possibility of constructing a new fellowship facility that would not only meet current needs but also free up the existing fellowship hall for additional educational space.
As they prayed, God began moving in hearts.
One church member sensed the Lord leading them to make a significant gift to help get the building "up and in the dry." Later, the church set aside a special day for an ingathering offering dedicated to the project. After weeks of prayer and anticipation, the offering was received, and those gifts helped complete the interior of what is now the beautiful lobby that welcomes guests into The Gathering Place.
Then God continued to provide.
Others were prompted to give. Additional gifts arrived at just the right moments. Time after time, God supplied exactly what was needed through ordinary people who simply responded in obedience. By the time construction was completed, the entire project had been finished with less than a $100,000 interest-free loan remaining to be repaid.
What followed became a testimony not simply of fundraising, but of faith.
At the center of that vision stood Pastor Ed Hinkson.
For fifteen years, Ed has faithfully served Hebron Baptist Church. Long before coming to Hebron, he impacted churches across Arkansas through his leadership with both the Pulaski Baptist Association and the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. But those who know Ed best know another part of his story: he's a builder.
Throughout his ministry, Ed has helped build churches, ministries, leaders, and relationships. This project became another expression of that calling. With steady faith, practical wisdom, and unwavering vision, he helped guide the congregation through a process that inspired people to pray, trust, and give generously.
Yet no one who knows the Hinksons would tell the story without mentioning Sandy.
Throughout the project, Sandy's fingerprints could be seen everywhere. From the welcoming atmosphere to the beautiful finishing touches and décor, she and her team helped transform a construction project into a place that feels like home. Together, Ed and Sandy have modeled what ministry partnership looks like—a shared calling to serve God's people and invest in His Kingdom.
Following the worship service, members filled The Gathering Place for the dedication celebration. The kitchen island overflowed with delicious finger foods. Conversations echoed throughout the room. Friends reconnected. There were smiles everywhere.
There was also a deep sense of gratitude.
During the dedication, Pastor Ed reminded the congregation that this building is not ultimately for them.
"It's for another generation."
Those words captured the heart of the day.
The Gathering Place stands as a reminder that faithful churches don't merely preserve the past—they prepare for the future. They make sacrifices today so future generations can hear the Gospel, experience Christian community, and find their place in God's family.
Hebron Baptist Church has done just that.
The building is beautiful.
The story behind it is even more beautiful.
Because in the end, The Gathering Place is not a monument to what people can accomplish. It is a testimony to what God can do when His people seek His direction, trust His provision, and faithfully follow where He leads.
And if the laughter, fellowship, and joy that filled the room on dedication day are any indication, the greatest stories connected to The Gathering Place have yet to be written.
